Thirty Years War

Causes:
  1. There was The Peace of Augsburg that could only bring temporary truce in the religious conflict. It only reconized the Lutherans and Roman Catholics so whem Calvinism started to grow the peace was lost. They Calvins wanted equal recognition of their rights just as the others had.
  2. There was a direct conflict in the Hapsburg-ruled Kingdom of Bohemia, but this period was followed by many others that contributed.

Effects:

  1. The Peace of Westphalia: which ended the Thirty Years. It expanded the Peace of Augsburg to include the Calvinist which was a big problem before.
  2. The Holy Roman Empire turned into a number of virtually independant states.
  3. Switzerland and the Dutch Republic independance was recognized.
  4. The German states the right to make treaties and alliances, which weakened the Roman Empire.
  5. Sweden got Western Pomerania
  6. Brandonburg got Eastern Pomerania

Calvinism

JOHN CALVIN- He believed that people already predestined for salvation, that success on earth determined your place in heaven, and that hard work and no leisure time were signs of success.

They had many beleifs such as being pessimistic about man and optimistic about God. They trusted in predestination. Every part of the Bible was taken literally by the Calvins but they rejected the Papal authority. The Calvins believed in no smoking, dirnking, gambling, blaspheming, dancing, music in religious. That you should not have too much leisure time because it will lead to sin.
